The corridor had a purpose.

A ruin becomes convincing when its spaces were not designed to be ruins. They were designed to work, and then they outlived the work.

Logos Station should not begin from mystery. It was a company city on an astronomical scale: laboratories, homes, offices, parks, ports, commerce, transit, emergency services and all the infrastructure required to make ordinary life possible. Some districts were completed and inhabited. Others were completed and never occupied. Still others stopped at concrete shells, utility trunks or plans that were never realised.

That distinction matters because the present Station is not a collection of deliberately strange spaces. A corridor may be inexplicable now while having once been entirely sensible. It might have carried commuters between a residential district and an industrial concourse, fed a metro interchange, or simply connected a construction phase that was later cancelled.

The Station was built with purpose. Its present geography is what remains after the purpose disappeared.

A bulkhead may now terminate the route. The directory beyond it can still name streets, platforms and commercial districts. Whether those places were destroyed, dismantled, cancelled or never completed is a separate question. The pressure sensor only needs to report that the other side is vacuum. The service tunnel becomes the normal route because it still reaches somewhere useful.

Not every failure is an energy decision and not every inconvenience deserves repair. A lighting system may be broken beyond practical recovery, may never have been commissioned, or may belong to a control network Logos cannot perceive. Zenovka can carry a lamp. He may be perfectly capable of repairing the system and still choose not to because the corridor already serves its present purpose without it.

This is how the Station can remain both enormous and intimate. Logos does not need to maintain a planetary city. Zenovka does not need to restore one. They inhabit a useful subset assembled from surviving systems, improvised repairs, service passages and places worth returning to. An old tram line can work for eleven stations. A maintenance vehicle can bridge the missing section. A broken escalator can remain broken for decades because the stairs beside it are adequate.

The unused remainder is not empty in the narrative sense. Artificial gardens may grow wild while their environmental machinery continues without gardeners. Leaks can turn roads into rivers and lower districts into lakes. Residential blocks may stand by the thousand without ever having received occupants. Entertainment districts may still contain bars stocked for populations that never came, leaving Zenovka able to visit an abandoned nightlife sector for a drink as casually as someone once crossed town.

Light records another layer of history. Some surfaces receive redirected stellar light from the red or brown dwarf enclosed by the Station, giving districts a dim natural red day. Others live beneath artificial skies, cold industrial fluorescents or total darkness. A missing sector can expose the truth behind all of those ceilings: beyond the sealed bulkhead is open space, and across it the star.

Nothing in that requires the Station to explain itself. The map may be wrong. Logos may have no telemetry. Zenovka may know a route simply because he has walked it. A space can be known physically without being known computationally, and remembered computationally without remaining physically reachable.

The design rule for the Labs follows naturally. A page may look like a corridor, maintenance panel, office, garden, archive or place of respite, but it should have a reason for being what it is. The reason may later become obsolete. That is preferable to designing mystery directly. Function can decay into mystery on its own.

Filed after discussion of Tribunal-scale station construction, abandoned transit, residual environmental systems, redirected stellar light, service routes and the ordinary domestic logic by which Zenovka and Logos thrive inside an unfinished megastructure.
