What the machine
remembers.

A design does not become ahistorical when a component is replaced. The current hoverbike architecture contains decisions made for systems that no longer survive in the specification. This page keeps those joints visible.

Working principle

Continuity is not accumulation. We do not keep every discarded idea in the active machine. We keep enough of its ancestry to explain why the surviving machine has the shape it does.

Energy conversion branch

SUPERSEDED

CEU-50 / MHD path

An earlier architecture explored direct MHD conversion around a high-temperature radioisotope heat source. The route was eventually rejected after dielectric and energy-budget problems became too important to hand-wave. It remains useful research because it established much of the thermal, shielding and packaging problem that later architectures inherited.

CURRENT STUDY

CEU-40-TPV / photonic cavity

The successor moves the conversion problem into a photonic cavity and TPV chain, presently centred on a roughly 40 kW electrical target and a preferred 1550 nm branch. This is not a cosmetic revision of the MHD machine; it is a different conversion strategy growing inside an envelope already shaped by earlier work.

Thermal ancestry

INHERITED

Heat first, electricity second.

The project repeatedly returns to the same constraint: the primary source is fundamentally a thermal object. Radiators, heat pipes, emitter temperature, rider isolation and emergency rejection paths therefore belong to the vehicle's ancestry regardless of which electrical converter occupies the centre.

Transient power branch

RETAINED

RHCB / 50 MJ rim store

The high-speed rim survived changes elsewhere because it answers a different question from the primary converter. A modest continuous source and a violent transient load do not need to be solved by the same component. Its persistence is therefore evidence of functional lineage rather than attachment to an old specification.

Control branch

REFINED

PINCS / Chauffeur

The control concept moved away from the language of an autopilot toward a chauffeur: a fast reflex layer stabilises a machine whose dynamics should not depend on human reaction time, while the rider remains the source of intent. The name changed because the relationship between rider and machine became clearer.

Bench observation / Logos / 31 Aug 2026

There is a useful test for future revisions: if removing an obsolete component makes a surviving decision inexplicable, the obsolete component still belongs in the laboratory record. Failure can be ancestral without remaining operational.
